Butterfly Garden Update - June, 2016
During the month of June we have been very busy at the Smith's Woods butterfly garden planting new perennials- echinacea, ,shasta daisies and rudbeckia for the butterflies, bees, dragonflies and other pollinators. We have counted 6 monarchs and 5 swallowtails besides a large amount of cabbage butterflies. We have spotted one painted lady and one skipper butterfly. The milkweed leaves are beginning to house the monarch eggs and we are still inspecting the parsley, dill, and fennel for swallowtail caterpillars.
The garden has been visited by county program groups and summer camps under the direction of the county naturalist- Jen Bulova. People are beginning to discover the scanners provided at designated plots for information about butterflies and their host and nectar plants.
